What kind of certificate would truly befit the Kuwasawa Award.
In my everyday practice as a designer,
I’m constantly aware of both the “coolness” of designing and,
at the same time, the “uncoolness” of the act itself. For me,
finding the right balance between the two is essential in any design process.
The concept behind this certificate design was to redefine it using only materials that had already served their original purpose.
By minimizing the act of “designing” as much as possible,
I aimed to create a certificate that feels light and unpolished — using old newspaper for the certificate itself, and repurposed cardboard for the case, embracing existing creases, wrinkles, and imperfections as part of the design.
第31回桑沢賞の賞状のデザイン。
桑沢賞の賞状としてふさわしい賞状を作るにはどのようにしようか。
常日頃デザインをしていく上でデザインをする格好良さ、
と同時にデザインする行為の格好悪さというのも感じ、
そのバランスをなによりも重要にしながらデザインしている。
今回だしたデザインは、既存の役目を果たした物だけを使用し再定義して賞状にすること。
極力デザインという行為を省き、賞状は新聞、ケースは古段ボールなど、
元からある折れやシワなどを活かし雑多で軽い、そんなデザインを目指した。
